CLAAS has launched the new ARION 5 CMATIC tractor series, replacing the established ARION 500 range with three four-cylinder models spanning 145 to 180 hp. The new ARION 5.140, 5.160 and 5.180 CMATIC use a 4.5-litre DPS four-cylinder bi-turbo engine and are offered exclusively with CLAAS’ continuously variable CMATIC transmission. Built at the company’s Le Mans tractor plant, the new generation also adopts the VISOR design language progressively introduced across the CLAAS tractor portfolio, bringing the mid-power four-cylinder range visually and technically closer to the larger ARION 6, AXION and XERION families.
The changes extend well beyond styling. CLAAS has introduced Auto Load Anticipation, which uses algorithms to anticipate changing loads and proactively adjust the engine and transmission—for example when an implement enters the soil—while drivetrain management continuously coordinates engine speed and transmission ratio according to load and travel speed. The tractors also gain automatic trailer-stretch braking for safer downhill transport, optional CEMOS DIALOG optimisation assistance, dynamic steering and deeper CLAAS connect integration. Comfort has also moved upmarket, with PROACTIV front-axle suspension, fully suspended cab, an optional premium heated, ventilated and massage seat, multimedia with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and up to 20 LED work lights.
The range positioning is particularly interesting. The ARION 5.180 reaches 180 hp from a four-cylinder architecture, while maximum permissible weight rises to 11 tonnes on the two larger models. CLAAS is also putting greater emphasis on total cost of ownership: warranty packages can extend coverage to eight years or 8,000 operating hours, reinforcing the company’s effort to compete not simply through horsepower but through technology, comfort, connectivity and lifecycle economics.
Bottom Line: The ARION 5 is more strategically significant than a conventional model-year refresh. CLAAS is effectively compressing technologies previously associated with its larger premium tractors into the high-power four-cylinder segment. With the ARION 5 reaching 180 hp and the new six-cylinder ARION 6 beginning at 145 hp, CLAAS now creates substantial overlap between four- and six-cylinder architectures. That gives customers greater freedom to choose between compactness and power density on ARION 5 versus six-cylinder characteristics on ARION 6, while allowing CLAAS to compete much more aggressively in one of Europe’s strategically important mid-power tractor classes.
