CLAAS is committing a further €9 million to its tractor development infrastructure in France, expanding the Test and Validation Centre at Trangé with a specialized facility designed to accelerate powertrain and cooling-system validation. The 950 m², 14-metre-high building will incorporate a controlled-climate test environment where tractors can undergo power testing through a PTO brake. Around 150 sensors will simultaneously measure parameters including coolant and oil temperatures, coolant flow, air velocity and thermal conditions around the engine compartment, allowing development teams to reproduce demanding operating environments under controlled conditions.
The investment matters beyond the test equipment itself. Trangé has served as CLAAS’ tractor testing and validation centre since 2012 and forms part of a broader French tractor-development ecosystem encompassing manufacturing at Le Mans and engineering activities at Vélizy. CLAAS has simultaneously been investing in additional manufacturing capacity at Le Mans, where the company has previously identified tractors as an important source of future growth. The latest Trangé project therefore adds R&D capability alongside the continuing renewal of CLAAS’ tractor portfolio and production infrastructure.
The facility will also recover energy generated during PTO dynamometer testing, using electricity on site and feeding surplus power into the grid. Construction begins in September 2026 and is scheduled for completion by December 2027. More strategically, however, the project should give CLAAS greater internal capacity to validate cooling concepts earlier in the development cycle — an increasingly relevant capability as tractor architectures become more powerful, electronically complex and required to operate reliably across increasingly diverse global climatic conditions.
Bottom Line: CLAAS’ €9 million commitment at Trangé should be viewed as another component of a broader long-term push to strengthen its tractor business, rather than simply as an expansion of testing capacity. Combined with investment in Le Mans and an accelerating product-renewal cycle, the project suggests CLAAS is building the engineering and industrial infrastructure required to support greater tractor ambitions over the next decade.
