GRIMME Reworks GF 400 Tiller Platform Around Easier Cleaning and Faster Wear-Part Service

GRIMME is substantially redesigning its GF 400 rotary tiller platform for potato and vegetable production, consolidating the previous GR and GF concepts into a single new-generation machine. The revised architecture introduces a new rotor, redesigned tine geometry and a different tine arrangement intended to produce a finer soil structure while reducing overall weight and the tractor lift and power requirements. The machine can also use the hybrid shaping hood already developed for the PRIOS planter, combining ridge-top plates with open shaping rollers to create stable ridge sides while retaining a more porous structure across the crown.

A central development is GRIMME’s new Go Clean concept. The housing can be opened hydraulically across the complete working width, giving operators substantially better access for cleaning and maintenance. Flexible polyurethane elements inside the housing are designed to reduce soil accumulation and noise when working in stony conditions. Easier removal of accumulated soil also has an agronomic dimension, potentially limiting the transfer of soil and associated pathogens between fields — an increasingly relevant consideration in intensive potato production.

Serviceability has also been addressed through a new quick-change tine system. Individual tines are secured through a tapered connection with anti-rotation protection and can be replaced in approximately 60 seconds, eliminating the multiple fasteners required by the previous arrangement. Taken together, the changes suggest that GRIMME has focused the new platform not only on cultivation performance but on reducing the less-visible operating costs associated with cleaning, wear-part replacement, tractor requirements and downtime.

Bottom Line: The GF 400 name is not new, but the machine behind it has undergone a genuine generational redesign. What makes the update particularly interesting is GRIMME’s emphasis on total operating efficiency rather than simply greater capacity: lower tractor requirements, faster tine replacement, improved accessibility and reduced soil accumulation. Go Clean also introduces an increasingly relevant dimension for specialist crop machinery — designing equipment around machine hygiene and cross-field biosecurity, not only field performance.
