JCB is broadening its North American compact loader portfolio with the new 250 and 290 skid steers, two 74 hp machines positioned in a high-volume segment of the market and designed for applications spanning agriculture, construction and property management. The 250 provides a rated operating capacity of 2,531 lb (1,148 kg), while the larger 290 increases capacity to 3,029 lb (1,374 kg). Both retain JCB’s distinctive single-arm loader architecture and side-door cab access, combining a relatively compact footprint with hinge-pin heights exceeding 10 ft.
For agricultural users, JCB is positioning the machines around repetitive material-handling operations including loading feed mixers, moving seed and fertilizer pallets, stacking hay and working around barns, feedyards and commodity storage areas. High-flow hydraulic options broaden attachment capability, while the compact dimensions and skid-steer maneuverability are intended to allow the machines to operate where larger telehandlers or loaders may be less practical. JCB also links the product positioning directly to labour availability, arguing that increasingly versatile compact equipment can help individual operators complete a wider range of farm tasks.
The launch also strengthens a part of JCB’s portfolio that sits below its larger material-handling platforms. Rather than relying solely on the distinctive telescopic capability of the Teleskid family, the 250 and 290 give JCB additional conventional skid-steer options in mainstream operating-capacity classes. The strategy therefore appears aimed at broadening JCB’s competitive reach in North American compact equipment while retaining the company’s differentiating single-boom and side-entry architecture.
