Azaneo Moves Irreversible Electroporation Weed Control Toward Commercial Launch to Challenge Herbicides on Cost

Australian agtech startup Azaneo is moving its non-chemical weed control technology toward commercial deployment with a tractor-mounted system based on Irreversible Electroporation (IRE). Instead of relying primarily on heat to destroy weeds, the technology delivers precisely controlled high-voltage pulses that create permanent microscopic openings in plant cell membranes, disrupting cellular function and causing irreversible cell death. This non-thermal approach is designed to require substantially less energy than conventional electrical weed-control systems: Azaneo reports that treated plants experience only a small temperature increase, compared with the roughly 60–70°C tissue temperatures typically required for thermal destruction. The company is currently operating at approximately 4–6 km/h, approaching practical herbicide-spraying speeds.

Azaneo is now testing its first commercial tractor-mounted implement for vegetable production, following trials on multiple Australian farms, with a target of building and leasing four machines during 2026. The architecture is modular, allowing working capacity and investment cost to be scaled according to farm size, while the absence of chemical application removes conventional spraying constraints associated with wind conditions and potentially allows much longer operating windows. The company’s central commercial objective is unusually explicit: rather than positioning electrical weeding simply as a sustainable premium alternative, Azaneo believes IRE can ultimately compete with or outperform conventional herbicides on a cost-per-hectare basis.

Mechanical, laser and electrical systems can kill weeds, but adoption at scale depends on achieving sufficient operating speed, energy efficiency and machine utilisation to compete with spraying. Azaneo’s use of IRE attacks precisely these constraints by separating electrical weed destruction from energy-intensive thermal treatment. Independent research also continues to support electrical pulses as a potentially energy-efficient weed-control pathway, although efficacy can vary significantly according to species and treatment strategy. If Azaneo can validate its claimed productivity and economics at commercial scale, IRE could emerge as a genuinely different technology pathway in the rapidly expanding market for herbicide alternatives—not simply another electric weeder.
