Hexagon Introduces Senvisio Vision-Based Guidance to Extend Precision Farming Beyond Satellite Coverage

Hexagon has introduced Senvisio, a new camera-based automatic guidance system designed for agricultural machinery operating in vineyards and orchards. Previewed for EIMA International 2026 in Bologna, the technology enables tractors to navigate between crop rows without relying on GNSS satellite positioning. The system addresses a persistent limitation of conventional precision farming solutions, particularly in environments where dense tree canopies, narrow passages and irregular planting layouts can interfere with satellite reception and compromise guidance accuracy.

Senvisio uses onboard cameras and image-processing technology to identify physical features of the crop environment, including vine trunks, trees, support posts and vegetation boundaries. By continuously interpreting these visual references, the system determines the vehicle’s position within the row and provides steering guidance through a compatible control system. Unlike conventional satellite-based solutions, it does not require predefined guidance lines or dedicated geographic information system workflows. Hexagon expects the technology to reduce operator workload, improve consistency during repetitive field operations and help minimize accidental contact with crops and supporting infrastructure. Commercial availability is planned for 2027.

The introduction of Senvisio reflects a broader evolution in agricultural positioning technology, where machine perception is becoming an increasingly important complement or alternative to satellite navigation. While GNSS and RTK systems remain fundamental to large-scale precision agriculture, specialized crops present operating conditions that require different approaches to automation. By extending guidance capabilities into environments where satellite signals are unreliable, Hexagon is strengthening its position in the emerging market for perception-based agricultural machinery control, with potential applications extending beyond conventional assisted steering.

Bottom Line

Hexagon’s Senvisio demonstrates how vision-based navigation can expand precision farming into agricultural environments where satellite guidance is difficult to maintain. Its strategic importance lies in reducing dependence on GNSS for specific operations and creating additional opportunities for automation in vineyards, orchards and other specialized cropping systems.
